But by then the game was already over, and in the end, even braver moves in quarters three and four (for example a TD pass over 49 yards on Breshad Perriman) didn’t help. A rushing touchdown from oldie Frank Gore (37) and another score via catch from Chris Herndon only made cosmetics. In the end, Chargers punter Ty Long purposely took a safety in his own end zone to let the clock run down to a second – that’s why the end result of 28:34 reads properly at first glance.
Gore wishes: “I would be so happy”
But behind the scenes it has been rumbling since the beginning of this regular season: How long can Head Coach Adam Gase (42, previously 2016-2018 in Miami), who was installed in 2019 and will be 7-19 in two years, be held? It should be an open secret that a dividing line will be drawn after Week 17 at the latest. And will the playmaker Darnold, who was injured on the shoulder and landed as a third overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, suffer the same fate? After all, in a catastrophic season, New York could strike again in the 2021 draft and elect a new leader – especially since critics Darnold have been counting more and more for weeks (only three touchdowns in six interceptions in six games in 2020, a total of 34 interceptions in three years ) and trust him less and less to make a leap towards the elite quarterback.
But for now, the jets have enough to do to deal with the reality after Week 11. With 0:10 the team is not only officially out of the play-off race as the first team (earliest elimination since 1990), they have now missed the finals for the tenth year in a row and are also involuntarily chasing the two shutout seasons the Detroit Lions (0:16 in 2008) and Cleveland Browns (0:16 in 2017). “It shouldn’t end like this – especially not if this is really supposed to be my last NFL year,” says running-back legend Frank Gore. “Hopefully we will at least manage to win. I would be so happy.”
But the New York Jets these days are very far from bliss or happiness. A current statement from substitute playmaker Flacco after his fatal Pick-Six on Sunday (“That was really bad”) or one from Defensive Tackle Henry Anderson: “We are all more frustrated than ever since we played football. ”
Would you like a final side note? The Cleveland Browns (17 years old) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (twelve) are currently experiencing the longest periods of drought without play-off action. But because these two franchises are currently doing very well, the jets after 2020, with their ten years already established, could involuntarily lead here too.
