The C train is a killer in the Marvel comics and needs to be stopped – and it’s also not the first time the New York subway has attacked its passengers.
The New York City Subway is officially a villain in the Marvel Universe and Doctor Strange is to blame. New York City is home to many superheroes in Marvel comics, but it also hides many dangers. different villains call the city home and the place is continuously attacked by the likes of Doctor Doom, Ultron, Thanos and others. But Gold Goblin #2 reveals that the former Green Goblin knows a part of New York that every citizen should avoid: the deadly C train.
When Nick Spencer’s Spider-Man run ended in 2021, Norman Osborn decided to turn his life around and leave his past as a Green Goblin behind forever. Now operating as the heroic Gold Goblin, Norman was sworn to protect the city as a masked vigilante, but when his face was seen by the two people he saved, his identity was revealed to the world. This makes Osborn’s journey to becoming a hero all the more difficult, but he perseveres – just in time, as the city is under the effects of the Dark Web event, and he is needed more than ever.
In Gold Goblin #2, written by Christopher Cantwell with art by Lan Medina, Norman Osborn storms off with his costume and gear; Since the Dark Web Effect has surrounded New York, inanimate objects have come to life with no other desire than to eat humans. Osborn runs through the city, watching the carnage unfold. One of his passengers protests; he could have taken the C train instead of a car. “The C train ate five passengers this morning,” replies Norman. As strange as it sounds, this isn’t even the first time a New York City subway train has attacked passengers.
The New York City Subway Has Gone Deadly in Marvel Comics (Again)
In Death of Doctor Strange: Spider-Man #1, the late Strange leaves Spider-Man with a set of instructions to carry out after death, one of which is to “exorcise the 666 train”. The car in front has a pentagram in a window and attempts to devour Peter, but this glitch occurs about a year before the Dark Web. It is possible that the C train Norman is talking about is another demon train that Doctor Strange didn’t control before his death. In a way, it’s his fault for letting the trains run amok.
For all his fighting skills, the Gold Goblin has absolutely no magical abilities, and the C-train is a magical enemy. It’s entirely possible that Train 666 will reappear and Doctor Strange will have to come back from the dead to stop it (it’s heavily hinted that its new 2023 run will begin with his resurrection). Either way, the C train must be avoided at all costs until the Green Goblin and Doctor Strange can tame it again.
