Being a car enthusiast in New York can be difficult, considering the nightmare of owning a personal vehicle in the city. We’re talking about finding and paying for parking, higher insurance rates, heavy traffic, and the time it takes to get around town by car. But what is rarely considered is how little real estate is available for car meets and events for those who can afford it. The process of permitting carpools can be difficult and expensive, some businesses don’t want the responsibility of holding events in their parking lots, and despite large crowds it can be difficult to get the word out and to develop a cohesive community – at least. in this area. editor’s experience with local car events in New York to date. But some have tried, and CarPark NYC’s latest successful attempt this weekend saw Fosun Plaza taken over in Manhattan‘s bustling financial district. Here’s what you missed.
Previous CarPark events around New York have focused on where cars are already allowed: drive-ins and parking lots. But last weekend’s event was a bit more special, with the cars treated more like works of art displayed in a public square, alongside some truly amazing works of art. On 19 October from 9am, CarPark welcomed a select group of vehicle enthusiasts to the plaza, with special ramps introduced to help position vehicles unable to climb the stairs alone (as some did).
Although it is free to the public and open to all, the cars on display were selected prior to the event. It included a good mix of off-road SUVs, funky European models, sports cars and much more.
By far, the most popular vehicle at the show was the Dodge Viper, with its open trunk displaying the big red-hooded V-10 engine in all its glory.
Naturally, a typical selection of Porsche sports cars appeared, including the dystopian off-road style 911, some classic generations, and newer items, such as the Speedster.
There were also some nice Mercedes-Benz convertibles and coupes parked nearby, including an early SLK in the original, iconic Sunshine Yellow color (and green Kermit-skin seats), which was gloriously lit by the sun this morning -there.
There was also a good performance from the brawny crowd, with Mustangs and Corvettes taking a corner.
Among the exotics were your usual Ferraris, a McLaren, a few Lamborghinis, and a new Maserati hidden on the side.
There were also a few Audi R8s along with the GT-R couple.
Saab made an amazing performance, which attracted a lot of attention despite not being in the “main” field.
BMW also put in a strong performance, with enough color to compete with the Porsche crowd in attendance. Check out our full gallery of the event, which was seen by thousands of visitors in the few hours it took place on Saturday.
