What you need to know about the New York Botanical Garden
- If you love flowers and plants, this is a place to put on your program: the New York Botanical Garden. The New York Botanical Garden is located in the heart of the Bronx, which gives you the opportunity to discover this district of New York much less frequented by tourists than Manhattan and Brooklyn.
- Founded in 1891, the New York Botanical Garden covers 100 hectares, establishing itself as the largest botanical garden in the United States and one of the largest in the world. The garden has also been listed as a historical monument since 1967.
- In total, you will be able to browse 50 different gardens that bring together flora from all over the world, from gardens in temperate zones to the desert to the tropics. A real world tour of flowers and plants!
What to see at the New York Botanical Garden?
- Also enter the impressive Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, a huge greenhouse with architecture inspired by the Italian Renaissance and modeled on that of the Royal Botanic Garden in Kew, not far from London. Inside you will discover an incredible collection of tropical plants, cacti and desert plants. Also take a look at the pools with their magnificent water lilies and elegant lotus flowers in summer.
- A little further on, walk through the Rock Garden, an alpine garden built in 1931. Plants and flowers run between stones and crevices.
- Do not miss the imposing building that houses the library. Founded in 1899, the LuEsther T. Mertz Library is the largest botanical library in America, with over 550,000 books and 11 million documents in its archives.
- Finally, if your feet start to hurt, board the Tram Tour, a small bus that will take you around the garden. The tour is included in the price of the entrance!
