The New Year’s gala concert of the Czech Philharmonic dazzled

Famous operetta melodies, waltzes, polkas and mazurka by Josef Strauss, Johann Strauss Jr., Richard Strauss, Franz von Suppé and Franz Lehár were performed.

The audience in the hall was conquered by the Kyrgyz soprano Katharina Konradi, who has lived in Germany for many years, where she has been a member of the Hamburg State Opera since 2018. Among other things, Veselá widow sang an aria from Franz Lehár’s operetta.

He was also dazzled by horn player and conductor Radek Baborák, who premiered Mondscheinmusik (Moon Music) from Richard Strauss’s Capriccio opera in a world premiere, arranged for French horn and string orchestra.

“We would find a number of wonderful songs that are good for a New Year’s concert. However, it is no secret that the compositions of Viennese authors, especially the Strauss family, have an extraordinary charm, “Manfred Honeck told ČTK.

He has been the Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since 2008 and under his direction won the Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance in 2018. He knows the Czech Philharmonic well, he often performs with them.

That he could hear himself perfectly was seen throughout the concert. The game with a hammer on an anvil, which was humorously demonstrated by Daniel Mikolášek, was a highlight for the spectators.

He just had to pour a toast for the conductor, who handed it over to the first violinist Jan Mráček. In addition to the orchestra, Manfred Honeck also conducted applauding audiences.

The concert took place under anti-pandemic measures, spectators were checked upon entry and had respirators.

The Vienna Philharmonic is already with the audience in the hall

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has traditionally broadcast Czech Television performances from the Golden Hall of the Friends of Music in Vienna. Last year, their concert took place without spectators online, this year with them, due to security measures in a half-packed hall.

Under the baton of conductor Daniel Barenboim, they performed fifteen songs and three additions by Johann Strauss, father and son, Josef Strauss, Eduard Strauss, Joseph Hellmesberger and others.

The famous conductor, who also performed at the Prague Spring Festival, conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for the third time.

In a traditional speech, he said: “Covid is not only a medical disaster but also a human disaster. He’s trying to divide us. We should all take an example from this body, from how it can come together. It is a signal of humanity, of humanity, of what we need most these days. “
