MWC 2023 is in full swing. And in case you didn’t know what Mobile World Congress is, it’s basically a trade show. But for MWC, it is mainly for mobile enthusiasts. In other words, it is where the product, concept or prototype gets the most attention. Besides the Series 13’s global debut, Xiaomi also took this opportunity to showcase its latest projects.
However, it is unlike any other prototype that you may have seen at various events before. Instead, Xiaomi surprised fans with a pair of augmented reality glasses. And the thing that makes this concept so amazing is that it uses far more advanced technology than any other AR glasses currently available.
Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass Explorer Edition devices
So, the pair of advanced augmented reality glasses is powered by the “Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass Explorer Edition”. And when it comes to hardware, the first thing that stands out is the housing. It looks like oversized Terminator sunglasses.
However, the front of the new Xiaomi AR glasses comes with a pair of Micro-OLED screens. These panels can deliver Full HD visuals and can reach up to 1200 nits of brightness. The AR Smart Glass also comes with three front-facing cameras, which map the environment right in front of the user.
Now, although the new Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass comes with high-end components and a large frame, it is fairly lightweight. The total weight is only 126 grams. This means that users will be able to wear it for a long time without experiencing any discomfort.
So, what powers AR glass? Well, Xiaomi chose the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 chipset. There is no onboard storage, which means it must be connected to a host device. But all of these hardware isn’t what sets Smart Glass apart from the competition. Instead, the functionality of the AR glass is the main feature.
What can smart AR glass do?
As the name suggests, the all-new Xiaomi AR is completely wireless. It communicates with a device through a “low latency communication link”. And what the Chinese brand suggests is that it can offer a latency of only 50ms, which is so fast that you can hardly notice any delay.
The internal hardware, along with the low latency connectivity, can make the Xiaomi AR glass deliver an experience that will truly be out of this world. Now, for comparison, most competing augmented reality glasses use a cable connection. For example, the TCL Nextwear S requires a wired connection to work. And an attached wire can certainly get in the way.
Other than that, in their simplest form, the new Xiaomi smart glasses can do almost everything nReal Water excel at. That is, it will offer you a wearable screen that will be directly on your face all the time.
But the thing is, you can use Xiaomi glasses to do more than just watch videos. Glass has many ready-made augmented reality apps. And the greatest thing about them is that they are far more advanced than the competition.
One can also present you with an interactive virtual desktop that allows you to keep several windows open at the same time. For mapping technology, you can control every aspect of windows, including moving, resizing, and closing them.
Like this AR app, Xiaomi presented two more demos at the MWC 2023 event. Each of them can offer you a sense of realism that the competition is still working to catch up with. In general, although AR glasses are in the prototype stage, they seem ready to go. We can’t wait for the commercial units to hit the market.
