An accountant, specialized in corporate consultancy and business organization with main offices in Milan and Rome, Alberto Miglietta is the new president of the Italian Weightlifting Federation (Fipe). He was elected with what were once called Bulgarian majorities, 99.68 percent, a record (the presence of voters was also significant, a sign of a large, serious and compact Federation). Miglietta, born in 1960, took the place of a friend, Antonio Urso, for twenty years at the top of the Italian Federation, who now remains secretary and treasurer of the international one. Weightlifting, a historic Olympic sport, has experienced difficult years, risking even disappearing from the Games, overwhelmed by corruption and doping. Now, after a long journey, the environment has been cleaned up. And Miglietta, thanks to his sporting experience (president of Badminton and CEO of Coni Servizi with particularly good results), has clear ideas. “We will increasingly be the Federation of strength and enthusiasm, which will also be able to inspire other disciplines with which we will find ever stronger synergy and communion of intent: the journey with some continues and with others it has even already begun. We are a great Federation with an enthusiasm that surprises me and stimulates me even more to give my best.”
What will the first steps be?
“I believe that our Federation still has important margins for development. Always in the line of ethics and correctness that has accompanied these years, making the most of what has already been done. A clean sport that respects the rules, bar none. On these bases we start, with enthusiasm and managerialism”
Is your sport widespread throughout Italy?
“Yes, more and more. We have over 1100 affiliated companies, more than 110,000 members. The leading regions currently are Puglia and Sicily, but we are present everywhere with a development in some regions that is surprising. We will work in the area in a widespread manner with our technicians, we will work on training, improving it even further and considering it our flagship made available to the entire sports system. The technical data are also extraordinary: after the Tokyo and Paris Games which saw us win medals with our Olympic and Paralympic athletes, young people are arriving with international results that are also extraordinary: turnover is important, the future is theirs”
What do you think as a long-time leader of the fact that federal presidents have no limits on terms of office and Malagò must stop at the third?
“Very simple: I think that everyone must be aligned on the same level, not only the Federations but also CONI and CIP. I don’t think the matter is over yet and I hope it will be considered with the attention it deserves.”
Finally, a curiosity, are you happy to be back on the pitch?
“Not just happy. I’m enthusiastic, I’ve kept myself well trained from all points of view”
