The new tool disinfects surfaces from coronavirus up to 90 days

Researchers from Hong Kong have introduced a new type of disinfectant – it will help reduce the spread of coronavirus and fight future diseases. Scientists at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have developed a tool that can protect surfaces from the virus for up to 90 days.

Now, Chinese officials are recommending the use of standard antiseptics. They kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus and most other microorganisms. But this protection is short-lived – their properties decrease as the substance evaporates. The new MAP-1 disinfectant solves this problem by retaining sterilizing properties for much longer.

The new spray consists of a million polymer nanocapsules that adhere to surfaces and remain there after the carrier fluid has dried. These non-toxic capsules contain a disinfectant that remains in a “suspended state” until it is touched. Hand warmth or moisture activates the capsule, releasing the disinfectant to the surface. It is effective not only against coronavirus.

The durability of MAP-1 will vary depending on how often it is touched to the surface – it can be effective up to 90 days. The spray works best on hard surfaces – door handles, countertops and handrails. After testing by HKUST, Germagic agreed to distribute MAP-1.
