Tennis fans in Australia can look forward to a new mixed team event.
The latest attraction in the world of tennis is called the United Cup. Like its “predecessor”, the ATP Cup, reserved for men only, the tournament will take place in the three Australian cities of Perth, Brisbane and Sydney. The 18 national teams with up to four players each compete against each other. The participating nations will be determined by the end of November at the latest.
In a first phase, the 18 teams will be divided into six groups of three (two per city). There will be two male and two female singles and a mixed doubles. The two group winners will then compete in each of the three cities and the three nations thus qualified will play the next round in Sydney. A fourth, the winner of the first stage, will complete these Final Four.
The final match will take place on January 8, eight days before the start of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. There are also 500 points up for grabs for the ATP and WTA rankings. (SDA / bjl)
