The new star in Breisgau – culture

Once installed by the Pope, the Archdiocese of Freiburg celebrates its 200th anniversary this Monday.

You have to celebrate the festivals as they come. If you like, even twice. The history of the Archdiocese of Freiburg began on August 16, 1821, 200 years ago. With a document dated to this day, a so-called bull, which is called “Provida solersque” after its initial Latin words, Pope Pius VII created facts about the reorganization of the Catholic Church in Southwest Germany. It was an ecclesiastical act with a political history. After the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, the Scularization (abolition of church ownership) and the Congress of Vienna of 1814/15, this step was necessary. The cooperation between state and church (s) had to be renegotiated. Freiburg, headed by an archbishop, became a metropolitan bishopric, i.e. the upper bishopric of the Rottenburg diocese, which was also new in 1821, and the re-established diocese of Mainz.
Why did Freiburg have such a career? One can speculate. One possible answer is: Because the city, which then had around 9,000 inhabitants, apparently had its fans long before the days of the sports club. One of them maybe even on the papal throne in Rome. In any case, Pius VII spoke of the “capital in Breisgau” in the context of the establishment of a new diocese.
