The new school flu vaccination campaign will begin with 4-year-old students on November 18

The Ministry of Social Policies and Public Health has announced that the new school flu vaccination campaign has started which is aimed at students in the second cycle of Early Childhood Education (4 years). They will be given the intranasal vaccine. To do this, nursing staff from Public Health and the Territorial Directorate of Education will travel to the centers starting on 18 November.

For students to receive the vaccine, their parents must sign an informed consent that they will be given by the educational institution.

As the Autonomous City reminds, “the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the flu vaccine for all children from 6 months to 5 years of age and in Melilla there is it is included in the childhood vaccination schedule from the 2023/2024 season.

“With the influenza vaccine in children, the aim is to avoid the high number of consultations in Primary Care and admission to hospital due to influenza, some of them very bad,” they say.

Vaccination in the educational center has a goal “to make access easier, to prevent parents from losing part of their working day.” In this way, the spread of the virus is prevented both in the center and to the elderly or people with chronic illnesses.

Children from 24 months of age can benefit from intranasal influenza vaccine (Fluenz) and thus avoid a puncture.

The rest of the child population, from 6 to 59 months of age, will be able to go to their health or vaccination centers to get their doses of the flu vaccine. Between 6 and 23 months, the traditional intramuscular vaccine is indicated and from 24 months onwards, the intranasal vaccine is given.
