“Rumor has it around the bivouac that there was a helicopter accident”, began by explaining Dominique Fillon, a former technician from Europe 1 who witnessed the drama closely and remembers it as if it were yesterday.
“The witnesses to the accident were in a car. The helicopter was flying over them and they saw it disappear, then reappear before crashing. When they reached the finish line, they announced to the police chief present on the spot that they had seen an accident “, he continued.
It was January 14, that of 1986 and the whole of France cried. Once the sun had set, the main interested party went to the scene and searched the rubble with a colleague, rubble in which bodies were found: “We immediately recognized, because we knew them well, Thierry Sabine who is the organizer of the rally, François-Xavier Bagnoud who was the helicopter pilot, and Jean-Paul Le Fur, who was a friend RTL. And then we found two corpses that we didn’t identify.“
These two were actually those of Daniel Balavoine and Nathalie Odent, journalist at Sunday Journal. “We kept this info all night. I listened to Radio France on shortwave to find out if, through another channel, they could have learned it. But nobody knew”, says Dominique Fillon, “forever” marked by this horrible scene.
