The former leader of the Labor Party and head of the influential non-governmental organization “Jewish Agency for Israel” will become the 11th President of Israel.
The duke will take the solemn oath of office in the Israeli parliament in the Knesset. He will then go to the president’s official residence in Jerusalem, where he will symbolically receive a residence key from his predecessor, Rivlin.
The President of Israel performs mostly ceremonial functions, but he has a duty to nominate a candidate for the post of Prime Minister.
The duke will be only the fourth president born in Israel, writes The Jerusalem Post.
He comes from a prominent family. His father, Haim Duke, was Israel’s 6th president, and his grandfather was Israel’s first chief rabbi.
