While the PSA Group and Renault have set out on modular platforms that can be adapted for both electric and hybrid models, Volkswagen is building new ID.X electric cars and its Enyaq iV code on the same MEB electric platform. Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) will now follow the same path with the E-GMP platform, on which new Hyundai, KIA and Genesis electric cars will be built. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 SUV will be the first in five years.
full new battery and power bank on wheels
The bite of the new platform is a bit surprising full of new battery system. The individual modules are not made up of wavy lines, but flat lines, which, according to HMG, made it possible to increase the energy storage density in the module and thus reduce the number of dl from which the module consists. At the same time, the liquid processing plant was cooled, which will have to cope with the high heat that occurs during super-fast charging.
The battery modules will be the same for all cars and their number installed in the battery case, depending on the configuration of the model, more precisely the required battery capacity. The case is always flat and under the floor of the vehicle, so there should be no compromise in the legroom in the rear seats, as was the case with Kona. On the contrary, there will be no central tunnel, the floor will be level in vehicles. Air conditioning and heating technologies have been diversified from the cab to the engine compartment, which, according to HMG representatives, contributes to the above-standard interior space and the new interior configuration options for the new models.
An important feature is the high voltage of the battery 800 V, which is twice the standard of most competitors. At a voltage of 800 V, the same power consumption is reduced by a lower current, not by a 400 V system, therefore conductors with a lower current can be used, depending on the weight.
In practice, this will mean that on properly configured chargers, new cars will charge with high power even without a liquid-cooled cable (ie, for example, on some hyperchargers configured to 75 kW for existing 400V vehicles, you will charge a full 150 kW with E-GMP, only Porsche Taycan could) and high-performance chargers will handle some configurations and 240 kW will be charged. In 5 minutes, top up the energy to 100 kilometers and top up 80 percent of the battery in less than 20 minutes.
The on-board AC charger will be heavy and special power and 11 kW, which is a good standard today. However, the interesting thing is that the inverter is also used to control the flow of energy, the so-called V2L mode (vehicle to load). The vehicle will also be able to be used as a source of energy, for example in a cottage or campsite, or another vehicle will be able to recharge it in an emergency. In this mode, it can provide 3.5 kW at 230 V, three times the size it has today Honda E, and side entry in other vehicles.
Robust chassis and fast engine
The advantage of a special electric vehicle platform is, in particular, that it does not have to take into account the needs of a much larger and heavier combustion engine. The processing plants were completely deformed, the relations are also conducted in the city, where it would not be possible with a conventional drive. The passenger compartment should be extremely durable, also because the chassis has a number of elements made of extremely high-strength steel, which must also protect the traction battery in the event of an accident.
wheels of electromobility |
The platform can with a maximum engine power of 600 kW and a maximum speed of 260 km / h, therefore using only the five-element rear wheel suspension and the newly developed Integrated Drive Axle, an integrated drive axle in which the wheel bearings are driven by axles. High maximum speeds are achieved here with the help of a high-speed electric motor (max. Motor speeds are 70 percent higher than those of the predecessors), using a standard single-speed permanently mounted gearbox (for stable speed reduction).
The concept requires a pair of electric motors, where there will be one, there will always be all-wheel drive available, but the system will be able to mechanically disconnect the front engine, and the car will create a rear wheel.
The motor itself has a reworked stator in which the conductors do not have a round, but swells (almost square) over what increases the efficiency of the electric motor. The cooling system, which in previous generations provided the liquid (water) circuit, is now an oil, and in addition to cooling, it also provides lubrication. The motor is integrated in one block with gearbox and electric converter.
The first vehicles on the E-GMP platform should arrive in Europe in the second quarter of five years.
