The new PC and laptop offers in the price check

Aldi Süd will be offering three new Medion devices from Thursday next week: Two laptops and a desktop PC will be available in the discounter’s range from March 26, 2020. The spectrum ranges from inexpensive office computers to expensive gaming flagships. GIGA has taken a close look at the offers and reveals which ones are really worthwhile.

Inexpensive office computer with gaming potential: Medion Akoya E62009

The desktop PC starts with the new Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd catalog: the Medion Akoya E62009. Aldi wants 499 euros for the computer – at first glance a cheap price if you look at the built-in components: A current i5 processor with integrated graphics unit, 16 GB DDR4 RAM, 512 GB PCIe SSD – and itself Windows 10 is already preinstalled on the system.

The PC also has WLAN and Bluetooth 5.0 at the factory and can also boast an integrated DVD burner and a variety of connections. Even a multi-card reader is integrated in the tower. The scope of delivery also includes a bundle of USB mouse and keyboard. As usual with Aldi, there is a warranty period of 3 years.

Good to know: The performance of the integrated graphics unit of the processor is not really sufficient for gaming. Since Medion also only installs a 250 watt power supply in the PC, you should at most install a graphics card without a separate power connection in the computer. The GTX 1650 would be ideal for this. In terms of performance, this is somewhere between the GTX 1050 Ti and GTX 1060 – in most cases this should be enough to play in Full HD. However, if you want to install a better graphics card in the computer, you also have to replace the power supply.

The main technical characteristics of the Medion Akoya E62009:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5-9400 (6 cores @ max.4.1 GHz)
  • Graphics card: none
  • RAM: 16 GB DDR4 RAM @ 2.666 MHz
  • Hard disk / memory: 512 GB PCIe SSD
  • Operating system: Windows 10 Home 64-bit
  • Connectivity: Multi-card reader / 4x USB 3.0 / 1x USB 3.1 Gen2 type C / 1x USB 3.1 Gen2 type A / 2x USB 2.0 / 1x microphone / 1x headphones 1x LAN (RJ-45) / 1x HDMI / 1x DisplayPort
  • integrated DVD burner
  • USB mouse and keyboard included
  • Dimensions (WxHxD): 17.0 x 38.0 x 38.5 cm / 7.75 kg
  • Special feature: hot-swap hard disk swap slider

But is it worth investing in the office computer at all? You can hardly get a similarly potent equipment at the same price. And what does it look like when you screw the PC together yourself? A 1: 1 comparison proves to be difficult here, since Medion does not state all the components of the Medion Akoya E62009 on the official website. However, whoever is a similar system clicks together, currently ends up at a price of around 555 euros – mouse and keyboard are not included and the processing under warranty is also likely to be much more difficult.

In other words: The offer for the Medion Akoya E62009 for 499 euros is really impressive. The desktop PC will be available from March 26, 2020 in the branches of Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd.

Powerful office laptop: Medion Akoya P15648

Also interesting is the office laptop that Aldi offers through the “Aldi delivers” program at the end of March: The 15.6 inch Medion Akoya P15648 has a lot under the hood: A 10th generation i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD and a dedicated graphics chip in the form of an Nvidia GeForce MX 250 – all of this is available for just 799 euros.

This combination not only provides plenty of steam when working, but can also be used to play a few current games. You shouldn’t expect particularly high frame rates, but for a smooth round Anno 1404, Civilization 6 or Cities: Skylines The performance will most likely suffice easily. The 15.6-inch full HD display with IPS panel provides rich colors, but does not offer the best response times. In other words: with fast movements, the image content can be blurred. However, this fact should only be noticeable in fast games like shooters.

Good to know: The weight is still very light at 1.85 kg despite the lavish equipment. So that you can continue to work properly in the evening, the keyboard has a backlight, the aluminum housing makes the laptop robust. If you are on the way to the office and forgot to charge your laptop beforehand, you will be happy that the notebook also has a quick charge function. By the way, Windows 10 is already preinstalled on the laptop. Here too, Aldi gives a full 3-year warranty.

The laptop can be ordered from Aldi North and Aldi South via the “Aldi Supplies” program from March 26, 2020.

Gaming laptop at Aldi: Medion Erazer X17805

If that’s not enough power, Aldi will deliver a genuine gaming laptop directly to your home at the end of March: the Medion Erazer X17805. The 17.3-inch gaming notebook costs an impressive 1,999 euros, but has also built potent hardware into the case. The Intel Core i7-9750H offers a lot of performance for gaming, but also for image or video editing, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 in Max-Q design ensures smooth frame rates on the 144 Hz display with Full HD resolution. A 1 TB PCIe SSD is available as memory, while a 32 GB DDR4 RAM kit with a clock rate of 2,666 MHz is used as working memory.

Medion.

The Medion Erazer X17805 is also one of the few gaming notebooks with a mechanical keyboard with RGB lighting. Particularly interesting: Despite the large display and the potent hardware, the weight of around 2.6 kilograms is still quite passable. However, you probably don’t want to carry the laptop around permanently. In addition to the weight, this should also be due to the rather moderate battery life. If you use the laptop in power-saving mode for pure office work, it is difficult and difficult to get through half a working day. If, on the other hand, you torment the battery by actually starting a game on the go, the oven is probably already out after just under an hour.

The key technical data of the Medion Erazer X17805 at a glance:

  • 17.3-inch full HD display with IPS technology @ 144 Hertz
  • Intel Core i7-9750H processor (6 cores @ max.4.5 GHz)
  • 32 GB DDR4 RAM @ 2.666 MHz
  • 1 TB PCIe SSD
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX RTX 2070 Max-Q with 8 GB VRAM
  • Windows 10 Home 64 bit
  • Stereo speakers with Dolby Audio
  • Backlit keyboard
  • 2.6 kg
  • SD card reader, 2x USB 3.1 Type A, 1x USB 3.1 Type C, 1X USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, 2x Mini-DP, 1x audio combo connector, 1x LAN (RJ-45)
  • 47 Wh battery

Although 2,000 euros sound like a lot of money for a gaming laptop, the price for the equipment is perfectly fine. In any case, we could currently not find a laptop with the same equipment at a cheaper price. The gaming laptop can be ordered from Aldi North and Aldi South via the “Aldi Supplies” program from March 26, 2020.
