Opel today revealed details of the new generation of the Combo light commercial vehicle (LCV). In addition to a new front end design and a new digital instrument panel, the new generation compact van, which retains all the advantages of the previous model, is also the first in its market segment to feature the most advanced Intelli-Lux LED Matrix Light headlights.
The Combo Electric, which runs without local emissions, also offers increased range.
In addition to the electric version, the new Opel Combo is also available with petrol and diesel engines, and if you choose the diesel variant, you can choose an automatic transmission as an alternative to the manual gearbox. Both drive versions of the new Opel Combo are available in two lengths, and buyers can choose between models with two or three front seats. The new Combo is also available in a five-seater Crew Cab version.
Opel CEO Florian Hitl: “The new Opel Combo is the leader in its class! In addition to the proven characteristics of a cargo transporter, the new Opel Combo also has modern technologies that make work safer and more enjoyable. In addition, the Combo Electric, which drives without local emissions, now offers greater range. It’s the perfect work car for professionals.”
The new Opel Combo can be recognized immediately and even from a distance, because its front is decorated with the Vizor design element characteristic of the brand, which is already familiar in the latest passenger cars. The Vizor forms a visually unified block across the width of the machine, successfully merging the Blitz badge with the brand’s signature front lighting system.
Premiere: Intelli-Lux LED Matrix Light system in the Combo class
The new Combo is not only the first Opel light commercial vehicle equipped with the adaptive Intelli-Lux LED Matrix Light headlights. It is also the first and currently the only model in its class with this technology. As soon as the car leaves a built-up area, the matrix lights, which contain 14 LED elements, automatically turn on the main beam and continuously adjust the length and distribution of the light beam. When the high beams of other cars ahead are detected, individual LED elements switch off to exclude other vehicles from the high beam beam and prevent dazzling other drivers. As soon as the light system of other vehicles is no longer detected, the LED elements automatically switch back on.
In addition to optimal visibility at night, the new Opel Combo Electric also offers increased range. Available with Eco, Normal and Power driving modes, the new all-electric compact van can travel up to 330 kilometers on a single charge of the new generation 50 kWh battery (WLTP combined cycle), which is 50 km more than the previous model. This is ensured by the further development of fully electric drive technology and – for the first time in the Combo – a highly efficient heat pump that helps conserve the running battery’s resources at low temperatures. The latest generation electric motor with a power of 100 kW/136 hp and a torque of 270 Nm allows the new Combo Electric to reach a maximum speed of 130 km/h. As standard, the Combo Electric has a 7.4 kW built-in charger, but for an additional fee, the manufacturer offers to install an 11 kW three-phase charger. The least amount of time is consumed for charging at a public 100 kW fast charging station, where the battery can be charged to 80 percent of its capacity in less than 30 minutes.
The new Opel Combo Electric: an uncompromising car with no local emissions
The excellence of the new Opel Combo Electric still lies in its ability to transport and tow heavy loads. Like its predecessor, the new all-electric Combo offers up to 4.4 cubic meters of cargo space (same as petrol and diesel models), 780kg payload and 750kg towing capacity, best-in-class figures.
In order to further optimize the driving experience, the Combo interior has been improved for ease of use and ergonomics. The new Combo is the first Opel light commercial vehicle to feature the new infotainment systems with 10-inch color touch screens and Qualcomm Technologies’ integrated Snapdragon Cockpit platform, which provides advanced graphics, multimedia and computer vision capabilities. The systems enable the use of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in wireless mode.
As an alternative to the new Combo, an innovative smartphone docking point is available. With a separate mobile app, the user’s smartphone becomes the vehicle’s infotainment control panel, which can also be controlled via buttons on the steering wheel. Behind it in the new Combo Electric are paddle shifters that allow the driver to select three levels of brake energy recovery.
Safer manoeuvres: rear and side camera images in the digital rearview mirror
When it comes to the safety of drivers and other road users, the new generation Opel Combo is still the class leader. The latest safety feature is Dynamic Surround Vision. The system includes two cameras, one above the rear door and the other below the passenger side exterior mirror. The new high-definition digital rear-view mirror displays two images – the rear view while driving and the blind spot image as soon as the turn signal is turned on. Compared to traditional mirrors, the system provides better visibility and allows the driver to maneuver more safely.
Additional safety is guaranteed by a range of up to 18 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Many are standard equipment, including Intelligent Speed Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Advanced Emergency Braking and Driver Attention Warning. Adaptive cruise control is available as an option.
Technologically advanced, roomy and capable of handling heavy loads, the new Opel Combo is a convincing choice for professionals looking for a capable compact van. The new fully electric version does not allow the slightest compromises in terms of functionality; it has the capacity and payload of internal combustion models, as well as the ability to operate in and out of the city without local emissions.
Sales of the new Opel Combo and Combo Electric are scheduled to begin early next year, with the first cars arriving in dealerships at the end of the second quarter of 2024.
