The new MK4 3D printer unveiled by Josef Průša – E15.cz

The MK4, like the other models, finally switches to a 32-bit architecture with Wi-Fi and Ethernet support, a simple (albeit functional) character display has been replaced by a colorful graphical interface. Like the XL model, the MK4 is armed with a completely redesigned extruder, i.e. the Nextruder.

The Nextruder is equipped with its own control electronics, so unlike its predecessors, it leads to the new xBuddy motherboard, which replaces the EINSY RAMBo, a single bundle of cables. The user no longer faces any complicated disassembly when replacing the fan and similar modifications.

But the main attraction of the Nextruder will be the easy replacement of 0.25-0.8 mm nozzles, while there is no need to throw out the existing V6 format, because an adapter can be purchased at the e-shop. The filament passes through the new extruder through a metal conductor, and the PTFE tubes, in which the string sometimes got stuck, also disappeared.

The displacement of the filament is driven by a precise planetary gearbox with a ratio of 10:1, and Nextruder, as in the case of the XL model, promises, thanks to improved sensors, accurate measurement of the first layer and in full automaticity without the need for user intervention.

Finally, MK4 thanks to the new firmware (the so-called Input Shaper and Pressure Advance, viz blog) promises a very high printing speed, which Josef Průša already boasted about on his Twitter yesterday.

Thanks to the improved Prusa Connect and preparation for Wi-Fi and Ethernet, the MK4 will be able to be controlled via a web interface, and the next generation Multi-Material Upgrade 3 (MMU3) will take care of automatic stringing.

The engineers from Holešovice originally wanted to release only a minor update of the MMU2S+, but in the end they completely rewrote the firmware, modified the plastic and metal parts according to feedback from the community, improved the electronics, and the Troika is now in the world, which should hopefully be more reliable than its predecessors.

And if a problem does occur, the MMU3 will first try to solve the problem itself, or, thanks to the improved two-way communication between the printer and the exchanger, it will display detailed error messages directly on the display. Until now, users had to decipher the sequence of blinking LEDs on the MMU.

Assembled with MKtroje 4, they are already available in the e-shop for 27,990 crowns. A cheaper kit for 20,990 crowns should also be available for pre-sale within two weeks. MMU3 will be available for 7,990 crowns.

Owners of existing MK3S+ machines can pre-order upgrade kits with different levels:

  • MK3.5 (6,490 CZK): xBuddy board (faster printing), new LCD
  • MK3.9 (CZK 12,990): Almost everything including Nextruder except for X/Y/Z motors
  • MK4 (14,990 CZK): Complete upgrade including new and more accurate engines

Upgrade kits will actually be available in June 2023.
