Mitsubishi Outlander is one of the cars that developed the segment of medium-sized SUVs at the beginning of the millennium. Today, however, the time is different and rather than off-road features, Outlander promotes its plug-in hybrid drive, when until recently, despite its advanced age, it was one of the most sought-after plug-in hybrids in Europe. But now the time of today’s third generation is coming to an end after nine years, and there is finally a successor behind the door. And he wants to show that he didn’t forget the old tricks.
The carmaker is already beginning to be enticed by its arrival, when in a way it returns to its roots in a published trailer. In a video revealing behind the scenes, it shows how harshly the prototypes of the new Outlander were treated during testing. We see camouflaged SUVs in terrain where they are not afraid to cross muddy sections, climb steep climbs or skid. What a refreshing reminder of the 1990s Mitsubishi! After all, the carmaker itself speaks of inspiration from the character of the legendary Pajer.

At the same time, Mitsubishi revealed in the video when the new Outlander will be introduced. We have to find out more on February 16, 2021, ie in three weeks.
However, the video already shows what we can look forward to. Beneath the camouflage layer is a distinctively shaped bow, a so-called dynamic shield with striking chrome plating and low headlights, which is confirmed by a previously published image of a car in the dark. The new Outlander will therefore be very similar Engelberg Tourer concept from 2019, which has long been said to be a forerunner of the new generation of Outlander. This will be the first representative of the new design style, which will later be taken over by other models of the brand.
As for the technology under the hood, the Outlander will be designed according to current trends. The plug-in hybrid version has proved to be a popular choice for the current generation, so the successor will mainly promote such a device. Specifically, the existing solution with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors will be taken over.
However, in selected markets, a conventional 2.5-liter four-cylinder atmospheric petrol cylinder will also be available, which is likely to be shared with Nissan Rogue (known in our country as X-Trail). There is talk that the Alliance will use technology from Nissan.
According to behind-the-scenes reports, the new generation Mitsubishi Outlander will be the first to go on sale in North America. It is still unclear whether he will arrive in Europe, as part of cost reduction, the manufacturer has stopped developing innovations for European markets, which also applies to Outlander. However, it is possible that at least a plug-in hybrid will be offered here in the future, similar to the one modernizovaného Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.
