The first of Mazda’s five new SUVs announced is a model called the CX-50. The carmaker unveiled it in the American version, because it will be manufactured and sold there, not in Europe. So what are we missing?

It is the first car to be created in collaboration between Mazda and Toyota; even the factory in Huntsville, Alabama, where it will be built, is called Mazda Toyota Manufacturing. But it’s not a hybrid at first good – the CX-50 will enter the market next year with a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with atmospheric filling, a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

For an additional fee, there will be a supercharged two-and-a-half liter and other electrified variants – whether we can expect a plug-in hybrid taken from the Toyota RAV4, we will not speculate yet – will arrive later.

What is new compared to the Mazda CX-5 is the choice of driving modes. This will be taken care of by the Mi-Drive system, which allows the driver to choose from several different modes for driving on asphalt, outside it or, for example, towing a trailer. Among other things, it should change the behavior of the ATV. So far, Mazda has only offered a sporty transmission mode.

In terms of design, the CX-50 is a bit more outdoor oriented than other Mazda. Photos with a roof rack or taken off the asphalt also suggest this. This suggests that it should be a competitor of the Subaru Outback. After all, all-wheel drive as standard would support that.

The interior is really minimalist and old-fashioned in design, as Mazda has been accustomed to lately. Manual controls for air conditioning remain in the traditional place and display controls in the center tunnel. The right middle vent vent acts a bit randomly, but interior designers will certainly be able to defend why two exhausts are not in the middle, as is usual.

As stated above, let’s not expect the CX-50 in European markets. However, larger CX-60 and CX-80 models will come to us, as the carmaker stated a few weeks ago. These are to be part of the so-called Large Family and have the engine in front longitudinally.
