The new MacBook Pros finally support fast charging via USB-C
All you need is a powerful adapter and the right cable
But the official one hides an unpleasant secret
Long life and fast charging are one of the hallmarks of Apple’s MacBooks. In the previous generations from 2021 and 2022, Pro models with the new chipset from Apple received fast charging with a power of 140 W, however, for this power, users had to use a MagSafe 3 cable. If they wanted to use standard USB-C for charging, they had to settle for “only” 100W charging. One would expect the same situation to occur with the latest 16″ MacBook Pro with the M3 chipset, but the opposite is true.
MacBook Pros can finally charge quickly via USB-C
Apple surprised its customers by the fact that the latest MacBook Pro can also be quickly charged via USB-C, i.e. with a full 140 W. In normal use, such fast charging is probably not needed, but if you are often on the go and have only limited access to a charger, you certainly such a high performance is suitable. Although Apple officially informs about this possibility at updated support pagesbut he doesn’t brag about it too much.
The 16″ MacBook Pro supports fast charging not only via MagSafe, but also via USB-C
In order to be able to use fast charging via USB-C, you need not only a sufficiently powerful adapter that can handle more than 140 W, but also the corresponding cable. It is surely no coincidence that in September Apple started selling this official accessory, which can handle charging up to 240 W, for the price of 890 crowns on their website. However, fast charging via the official cable also has its pitfalls – it can handle fast charging, but you can only transfer files through it at a speed according to the USB 2.0 standard, i.e. 480 Mbit/s.
