The new Lille, the Ligue 1 champion, is left behind by coach Christophe Galtier

Galtier still hasn’t decided which club to move to after leading Lille to break PSG’s dominance.

Christophe Galtier announced he would leave Lille just two days after the team were crowned Ligue 1 champions this season.

Lille beat Angers 2-1 on Monday (24/5) WIB, to secure the French crown, finishing in the top spot in Ligue 1 2020/21 with a one point advantage over defending champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite their success, coach Galtier decided to leave the club after spending four years in his tenure there.

Said Galtier to The team: “I made a decision. I told the president, Olivier Letang, after listening to him a lot this morning, that I was leaving LOSC. Or that I was quitting with LOSC, I don’t know quite what terms to use.”

“I just feel confident that I have spent my time here. That four year cycle is long enough for a coach. So yes, it’s only been five months I collaborate every day with Olivier Letang and five months isn’t long for a coach to work with.”

“After spending four years here, I feel in my heart that it is time to leave this beautiful club, this extraordinary club.”

“My decision has nothing to do with the team’s final ranking, if we finish fourth or seventh I will make the same decision,” he continued.

“I didn’t want to leave just because I was successful. I left because I had decided that after four years it was time to go. I spent eight and a half years at Saint-Etienne, including seven and a half years as team leader, that’s good.”

“I left Lille with a great result, I needed something else. I don’t want to get stuck in a routine, something classic, like I experienced at one point at Saint-Etienne. Wear and tear, always being in the same environment.”

The 54-year-old coach, who played for Lille as a defender from 1987 to 1990, took charge of the first team in December 2017 when they threatened relegation to Ligue 2.

But the team from northern France survived the relegation by finishing 17th and just one point above the relegation play-off zone.

However, there were major changes the following season, when they finished runners-up behind PSG, then ended the 2019/20 campaign in fourth place.
