It has already been reported that on Thursday, the LBS Board approved the former state unit player, an expert from the Sports Department of the Ministry of Education and Science (MES) Cyprus, as the Secretary General of the organization, who will replace Edgars Šneps. He used to work for LBS, when from 2017 to 2019 he led the Latvian Youth Basketball League.
“Right now, the key is to understand the wide range of issues. Yes, I have worked for LBS before and I am no stranger to it, but I do my job in a very narrow field. I want to understand the big picture, because the range of work will be very wide. “I have to understand what the real possibilities are in relation to my wishes, so I would not want to come up with loud slogans,” said Cyprus.
As the President of LBS Raimonds Vējonis announced at a press conference on Friday, the candidacy of Cyprus in the Board was unanimously supported. There was no competition for the position.
“I didn’t know how to invite any other people in their environment and how the candidates were promoted. I didn’t take part in the decision-making. It’s not that I applied for this position. I was invited by Raimonds Vējonis, I won’t say a specific date, but it was already during the pandemic,” Cyprus.
Cyprus will take office once its employment relationship with the Ministry of Education and Science has ended.
“On Monday I will try to settle my relationship with my current job. Given the law, I have to work for a month, but I also have to watch how the work starts. I will try to be faster,” said Cyprus.
Cyprus ran for the chair of the head of the organization at the members’ meeting in January, where the current president of LBS Vējonis was also elected, but withdrew his candidacy shortly before the vote. Significantly, at that time, Cyprus called on its members to vote directly for Vejon.
Anete Jēkabsone-Žogota also applied for the position of president, whose like-minded person Edgars Jaunups criticized Cyprus and Vējonis on the social network “Facebook” on Wednesday evening.
“It is surprising that a person will be confirmed as the Secretary General, who was actually dismissed by the previous board from the position of the director of the Youth League for performing the duties of a hidden assistant agent,” wrote Jaunups.
“First of all, I was not fired because everything happened by mutual agreement. Let’s be correct and not distort the facts,” explained Cyprus, who did not pay much attention to Jaunupa’s recording. “The situation was quite simple – at that moment political games started and unfortunately one of them was involved. There was pressure from some people. At the same time there was an opportunity to develop myself in the Ministry of Education and Science, where I won the competition. I decided to try my hand there. , develop as a personality and understand the administrative environment. “
“I try to move away from it all and not bother a lot on social networks. The basketball union is quite a big association with a lot of people involved. There will be no situation when everything is fine for everyone. My task is to find the right direction for Latvian basketball,” stressed Cyprus. .
Cyprus, 38, was born in Rezekne. From 1998 to 2015, he was a professional basketball player, playing in clubs in Latvia, Italy, Slovenia, Poland, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Estonia and Lithuania. He has played in the Latvian U-18, U-19 and U-20 teams, from 2000 to 2008 he has played 87 games in the national team, represented Latvia in the 2001, 2005 and 2007 European Championships.
The new Secretary General of LBS has a master’s degree in business administration and a basketball coach’s certificate, in 2018 Cyprus graduated from the International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) “Europe” education program “Time out”.
From 2010 to 2017, Cyprus has been the director of SIA “Jauno mängotāju attīstības aģentūra 2010”, organized summer camps for young basketball players, coaching clinics and seminars. In 2015-2018, the executive director of the association “SportSmarts”, in 2015-2016 the project manager of SIA “Dinastija”, in 2017-2019 the director of the Latvian Youth Basketball League of LBS, in 2019 the international young talent camp “Basketball Without Borders Europe 2019 “technical director, since May 2019 – expert of the Sports Department of the Ministry of Education and Science.
