Brno – The first year of the Book Brno sales fair began at the Brno Exhibition Center. The organizers invited more than 120 writers from the Czech Republic and abroad, prepared discussions, autograph signings and other accompanying program. Both small publishers and the biggest players on the market offer their products. Hundreds of people visited Pavilion E today, and the organizers expect more attendance at the weekend, when the popular culture festival Comic-Con Junior is also held at the same place.

“The book fair was in Brno, but it hasn’t been for a long time. We conceived the event as one big meeting of writers with their readers and, of course, publishers,” said one of the organizers, Pavel Koutský, at the opening ceremony.
Among the invited writers are, for example, the British authors of thrillers and detective stories, Daniel Cole and Tim Weaver. Both will perform on Saturday, as will Swedish author Karin Smirnoff, who is developing the Millennium book series by the late author Stieg Larsson.
The Czech scene is represented by Kateřina Tučková, Michal Viewegh, Jiří Hájíček and many others. Today, authors of historical detective stories and adventure stories debated, for example, how they work with the motif of murder and death in their books. In this regard, the quality, not the quantity, of murders is important, agreed Miloš Urban and Petr Stančík.
A book fair was held in Brno in the past, the exhibition center last hosted it in 2006. The World of Books in Prague and the Autumn Book Fair in Havlíčková Brod are now among the largest similar events in the Czech Republic, with other events in Pilsen and Ostrava.
The organizers of Kniha Brno want to establish a new tradition, they will use the first year to get feedback from visitors and possibly improve the event for the next years. Everything will revolve around readers and writers, said another organizer, Pavel Renčín. The festival program is on the website www.knihabrno.cz.
