Since September 2023, the Wissensturm City Library has been offering a platform for everyone who wants to get involved in climate protection and sustainability with the “KlimaEck” funded by the City of Linz’s Climate Fund. “Since then, around 1,000 people have attended workshops, exhibitions, discussions and readings that were planned together with the Upper Austria Climate Alliance and numerous Linz initiatives,” says Climate and Education Councilor Mag.a Eva Schobesberger, who is enthusiastic about the success and thanks the city library team and the participating initiatives.
The city library is now publishing part 2 of the program. One of the highlights in autumn is a virtual power playground from the Energiewende Linz association with a keynote speech by bestselling author Marc Elsberg on October 2nd. Participation in all program items is free of charge. It starts with a harvest exchange from September 2nd: As a continuation of the seed and plant exchange that the city library organized in the spring, it is a welcome place for surplus fruit or vegetables from your own garden throughout September. Swap instead of buy is also the motto of the clothing exchange island from October 7th to 17th: Well-preserved items of clothing can find new owners here. In keeping with the theme of sustainable textile consumption, the workshop “FRED – The backpack for the fashion check” will take place on October 17th, and the following day the Nähküche Linz is offering a darning salon in the KlimaEck for the second time. With creative darning techniques, the life of your favorite item of clothing can be extended here.
The Climate Corner for Children
For young people interested in climate issues, there will be a reading on September 18th with author Laura Feller and her children’s non-fiction book “With Hands and Feet”, which explains the ecological footprint in a playful way. The popular bicycle repair workshops are also back on the program. Here, children aged 6 and over can get their bikes ready for the family bike trip on September 4th: Accompanied by the Linz cycling lobby, everyone will cycle together from the knowledge tower to the climate oasis in Linz harbor. The “Linz on Foot” association also goes “outside”. At the GEHspräch on November 26th, the Bauernberg, Freinberg and Schlossberg will be explored, starting from the KlimaEck.
Theater on 2 square meters
Another highlight is the performance of the TamTam theater group with their play “But we are here” on October 21st in the KlimaEck. The play parodies the film “Avatar” and addresses climate justice on a stage that is performed by six people on just two square meters. Regular climate puzzles and workshops on the topics of waste separation, food coops, and the geometry of nature offer the opportunity to learn and try out new things. Anyone who wants to know how climate change affects forests, lakes, high mountains, and settlements can visit the “KlimaAlps” exhibition by the Upper Austrian Climate Alliance in the KlimaEck from September 23rd.
Exchange ideas and knowledge at the “Stammtisch”
Since its inception, the KlimaEck has also been a center for information and exchange. It is located in the non-fiction section of the city library in the Knowledge Tower (1st floor) and is accessible to visitors at any time during opening hours. Carefully selected media and materials with information and ideas on climate-related topics are available to browse and borrow. A fixed point for networking is the “Stammtisch” on the first Monday of every month at 5 p.m.: This is where the KlimaEck community meets to exchange ideas. Anyone interested is cordially invited to attend and join in the discussion. Other projects are also regularly presented here, such as “Climate-Social Linz” on November 4th. One week later, on November 11th, there will be an opportunity to exchange ideas with the city climatologist Johannes Horak in the KlimaEck about the city of Linz’s climate change adaptation concept.
Awarded the Library Prize
The KlimaEck is a project of the Linz City Library, which is funded by the City of Linz’s Climate Fund. In May 2024, it was awarded the Library Prize of the Austrian Library Association as an outstanding participatory project. It was created and grew in close cooperation with the Upper Austria Climate Alliance and numerous Linz initiatives. At the kick-off meeting in September 2023, around 25 representatives of climate protection associations, experts and interested parties worked together with the city library team to determine which formats could be accommodated in the KlimaEck. The fact that almost 1,000 people – including many first-time library visitors – have visited the KlimaEck since the program started in January 2024 shows that the KlimaEck has now developed into a lively climate meeting place in Linz.
