The New Jersey Devils: Meeting High Expectations and Building for the Future

If the Devils made many eyes widen last season, the team will have a lot to do to meet the expectations placed on them this season.

At least that’s what Martin Brodeur said during an interview with Jean-Charles Lajoie on Monday.

“The future is really exciting. We see the focus of our young players at training camp. This year, it’s a different atmosphere. People realize we have arrived. The expectations to win are there, right now. We made acquisitions and lost certain players. So there will certainly be a little adjustment time. But like all teams aiming for the Stanley Cup, we are excited for the season to begin.

The New Jersey Devils vice-president of hockey operations adds that the young players in his training are however well equipped to deal with pressure.

“There is always some pressure when expectations are higher. Last year, there were a lot of teams that didn’t think we were that good. But there, we won’t surprise anyone anymore. Everyone knows we have a good team. We’re going to have to answer certain things.”

The legendary goaltender also believes that the current Devils roster has nothing to envy of the winning editions of his time as a player.

“Last year, we were a little ahead of our plan. Our players have been pretty healthy, that helps a lot. We proved that we could make the series. We really had a good season. It was the best season in Devils history. It’s a little surprising, given all the good teams that have been here, but this team did better.”
