From March 1st, 2023, users of mopeds, mopeds, scooters and small electric vehicles (e-scooters) will need a new insurance number plate. As part of the annual color change, green must be exchanged. The changeover to the new insurance number plate in black is pending.
This means that all green insurance indicators will automatically lose their validity at the end of February 28, 2023. Insurance cover is then no longer available. In the event of an accident, the driver can then be held liable for the entire damage. And: Anyone who drives on public roads without insurance coverage is liable to prosecution. Because Section 6 of the Compulsory Insurance Act clearly states: Whoever uses a vehicle on public roads or places or permits its use, although the liability insurance contract required for the vehicle according to Section 1 of the Compulsory Insurance Act does not exist or no longer exists, will be punished with imprisonment for up to one year or a fine .
The Head of the Traffic Police in the West Police Department, Peggy Wölk:
“Car insurance is always important. Anyone who does not want to be left with the costs of property damage or personal injury in the event of an accident is better off with appropriate insurance. Repair costs, medical bills and other costs quickly add up to several thousand euros. Therefore, from Wednesday, either with valid insurance or on foot! There will be no closed season. Anyone who is found with a green license plate from March 1st, 2023 will be charged with violating the Compulsory Insurance Act and will then have to push the rest of the way. Anyone who drives in this way on purpose or is unteachable, unfortunately we have to confiscate their vehicle.”
