The new generation of the steering wheel no longer peels off, but it has a specific “worm”
When Tesla introduced the new stick-shaped “Yoke” steering wheel for the Model S and Model X, it unleashed an avalanche of criticism. She first focused on the worse controllability of the car with a stick, but then there were also problems with the quality of the steering wheel, which became worn rather quickly, and its upholstery began to peel off in certain places.
The problem was only aesthetic, but given the prices of Tesla’s top-of-the-line electric cars, it’s simply not surprising that the owners expected a premium look that would last for a while for a lot of money. However, the car company responded to the criticism and presented a new version of the steering wheel, which was supposed to solve the problems.
According to the first reactions, it really seems that the peeling problem has been solved. But a new problem is starting to appear, which has been given the funny and at the same time apt nickname “Tesla Worm” – in other words, “Tesla Worm”.
The problem is related to the curved protrusion in the center of the steering wheel that runs through the Tesla lettering. At the same time, the worm should practically always appear in the same place – it stretches from the bottom of the steering wheel and passes between the letters L and A. This is also evident in the images that accumulate on Reddit.
Considering the location of the “worm” and its shape, it is not surprising to speculate that it is related to the airbag. However, none of the Tesla owners with this defect have yet decided to remove the leather upholstery and investigate the problem further. However, one of the owners of Tesla should have already stated on Reddit that representatives of the car company know about the special shape on the steering wheel and will probably not deal with it further.
After all, even in this case it is probably just an aesthetic defect that will not have any effect on the function. Therefore, it is not surprising if the car manufacturer does not solve the problem. Again, this says something about the final quality control.
