the new generation of RAM is finalized and will land on PCs in 2021

After several years of gestation, the DDR5 RAM standard has just been finalized by JEDEC, the consortium responsible for its development. Replacing the DDR4 which has been operating in electronic devices for six years, the DDR5 is its evolution in “x2” mode.

Twice as much maximum bandwidth (up to 6.4 Gbit / s versus 3.2 Gbit / s for DDR4), twice as many memory banks (32 as against 16), twice as much data written per cycle, etc. And quadrupling the size of the modules from 32 GB to 128 GB.

All this, with lower energy consumption at equivalent performance since the voltage drops from 1.2V for DDR4 to 1.1V for the new DDR5. If some smartphones already embed LPDDR5 (in non-final specifications) like the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, the first computer architecture to move to this new memory should be the future AMD platform called AM4. It should be available during the year 2021.
