The New Generation Mercedes-AMG GT: Weight Increase and Sales Potential

The new generation Mercedes-AMG GT weighs almost two tons and loses some elements of pure sports cars, but both can paradoxically be in favor of sales numbers.

When Mercedes-Benz unveiled the new generation AMG GT sports car a few days ago, many fans of this model were disappointed by the presence of two emergency rear seats and all-wheel drive. For many customers, this may be a pleasant change, but it is not free – the car has gained 355 kilograms.

The previous AMG GT was not exactly a light car with a weight of 1.6 tons, but compared to a number of other sports cars, it is not so much after all – after all, the small BMW M2 today weighs 1.8 tons. The new generation, according to the number hidden deep in the press release on the scale in both versions, AMG GT 55 and AMG GT 63, will show 4343 pounds of curb weight, or 1970 kg.

The increase in weight could almost be excused if the AMG GT were a plug-in hybrid, indeed, keeping the weight under two tons in that case would be an achievement. The recently introduced Mercedes-AMG C 63 with a plug-in hybrid system weighs just over 2.1 tonnes.

But the AMG GT is not a plug-in hybrid, so we have to compare it with conventional competitors, and the most logical one is the Porsche 911. It weighs 1640 kg in the Turbo version. Even the notoriously heavy Nissan GT-R weighs less than 1.8 tonnes.

But the increase in weight alone does not mean that customers will lose interest in the AMG GT. It can even be the other way around. Although the novelty lost the elements of a pure sports car, such as an engine with a dry crankcase or a gearbox located at the rear axle, however, according to the automaker, customers demanded more practicality without a decrease in performance.

In addition, the mass of the car will be corrected by a new hydraulic system of active suppression of side tilts, so there is probably no need to worry too much about driving characteristics.
