Last week CD Projekt RED announced that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S versions of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt have been postponed “until further notice”. The wording quickly caused concern, but the developer has stepped out to reassure fans.
In a recent investor interview (via PC Gamer) CD Projekt-top Michał Nowakowski pointed out that this is not a long-term postponement.
– I have looked at headlines that have appeared here and there online, and I saw one that I really noticed. It said “Witcher 3 for the next generation postponed indefinitely”, which makes it sound as if the game is trapped in a kind of development hell, Nowakowski said and continued.
– I want to state that this is not the case. There has been a lot of insinuation that we will launch, sort of, in June next year or something like that. That is certainly not the case.
The reason for the postponement was that CD Projekt stepped in to take over the development work from an external studio. The transition has only just been completed, and the team is therefore working to investigate how much work remains. That is why the project does not have a new launch date, Nowakowski reports.
Later in the investor interview, CD Project Manager Adam Kicinski indicated that not much work needs to be done, and that the work is carried out by a team of 15 employees. The new version will, among other things, refurbish the graphics and shorten loading times, and will be free for those who already own The Witcher 3 on PC, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
CD Projekt is also working on a new The Witcher game.
