The New COVID-19 Vaccine: Innovation and Hope

By Dr. Concepción Quiñones de Longo, Former Undersecretary of the Department of Health of Puerto Rico, Member of the Board of Directors of VOCESPR

The COVID-19 pandemic has left an indelible mark on our lives. Although we have adapted our behaviors to coexist with the virus, the risk remains latent and cannot be ignored. COVID-19 has become an endemic disease in Puerto Rico, similar to influenza, which means that we must take preventive measures every year to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

Recently, the Puerto Rico Department of Health announced the approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of a new COVID-19 vaccine formula. This vaccine, created to combat the KP.2 strain of the omicron variant, is key in our ongoing battle against the virus. The new mRNA formula has demonstrated in clinical studies an ability to generate a strong and long-lasting immune response, indicating prolonged protection against the disease.

Understanding the importance of vaccination is essential. Getting vaccinated is an act of individual responsibility and collective solidarity. It is our most effective tool to prevent resurgences of the virus and protect the most vulnerable, such as older adults, people with compromised immune systems, and those with chronic health conditions.

VOCESPR highlights the importance of preventing respiratory diseases, especially in the adult population. Diseases such as seasonal influenza 2024-2025, pneumococcal pneumonia, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and whooping cough (pertussis) represent serious threats to public health, increasing the risk of hospitalizations and mortality. These diseases, which coexist with COVID-19, underline the need to get vaccinated to protect the most vulnerable.

Our motto this season is: “Breathing is Vital: It All Starts with Prevention.” Getting vaccinated is not only a personal responsibility, but also an act of collective solidarity. Protecting ourselves is protecting our loved ones and the community.

Trust the science. Vaccines have passed rigorous safety tests and have proven to be safe and effective. The approval of this new formula by the FDA confirms its compliance with the highest standards. Getting vaccinated is an act of trust in science and in our ability to protect community health.

Remember that every dose counts in the fight against COVID-19. This year, 94.99% of deaths in Puerto Rico have been in people over 60 years of age, highlighting the urgency of getting vaccinated. Adapted versions for children from six months to 11 years are also essential.

Don’t wait, get vaccinated. Consult health professionals and reliable sources to resolve your doubts. Visit “Respirar es Vital” at vocespuertorico.org for more information and vaccination centers. Together, we can stop the spread of the virus and move toward recovery. Solidarity, trust in science, and vaccination are essential to ensure a safer future for all.
