As part of the festivities marking the celebration of the 63rd anniversary of Togo’s accession to international sovereignty, the President of the Republic, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, chaired three ceremonies on Monday, April 24.
In addition to laying the first stone for the construction of the University of Kara, in the prefecture of Kozah, the Head of State proceeded to the inauguration of the new central market of Kara, whose commissioning is eagerly awaited by traders and by the entire population. With an attractive and futuristic architecture, the infrastructure located on nearly six (06) hectares has hundreds of stalls, several shops and stores as well as buildings for administrative use. The structure is a component of the support project for the reconstruction of markets and traders in Kara and Lomé (PARMCO). In this context, the large Adawlato market in Lomé, also under construction, will soon open its doors.
Built on an area of 5.72 hectares, the new infrastructure, which takes into account a future extension, will be able to accommodate up to 9,500 people and has an outdoor layout consisting of gardens, an esplanade and parking.
It is built on three levels (ground floor and two floors), and includes 736 units of stalls, 72 units of shops, 05 premises dedicated to banks and insurance, 8 wholesalers’ stores, 6 units of cold rooms, a police unit and an infirmary.
“The realization of this work is the illustration of your determination to constantly meet the needs of the populations in all circumstances, and in this particular case, to restore hope to the brave women traders of the Kara”, indicated the country manager of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group, Wilfrid Abiola, whose institution participated in the financing of the project, just like BOAD. “The AfDB reiterates its availability to support Togo in its economic and social development efforts for the benefit of the populations“, has also assured the official.
As a reminder, work is also underway in Loméfor the reconstruction of the capital’s large market.
Third and final activity on the program of the day, the inauguration ceremony of the Institute of work-study training for development, dedicated to livestock trades (IFAD-Elevage) of Barkoissi in the prefecture of Oti. IFAD-Elevage trains young Togolese in the creation, running, management and operation of agro-pastoral farms, in the production and processing of dairy products for the development of the sector in Togo.
