In the same group as Sweden, the Netherlands played against Portugal. And already after three minutes of play, Portugal had a ball in goal, but it was ruled out for offside. Instead, it was the Netherlands who scored the first goal of the match through Damaris Egurrola. Just a few minutes later, Stephanie Van Der Gragt extended the lead to 2-0 when she nodded in a corner.
The Netherlands dominated the first half and had several opportunities to expand further. But in a game reversal, a Portuguese player collapsed in the penalty area. The judge initially chose not to blow, but when the VAR room called the judge’s attention, she chose to review the situation. And after a few minutes of deliberation, the referee chose to change and sentence the penalty.
The penalty was taken care of by Carole Costa and reduced to 2-1. And at the beginning of the second half came the equalizer for Portugal. Diana Silva nodded in the equalizer in the 47th minute.
Decided with dream goal
Shortly afterwards, the Netherlands regained the lead, at least temporarily, but after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out when the goal scorer Jill Roord was offside. But in the end, the Dutch team would have to rejoice. Danielle van de Donk shot a rock hard distance shot straight up the crossbar and gave her team the lead with 3-2.
That goal was decisive in the match and the Netherlands won 3-2 and thus goes up as number one in group C before Sweden on more goals scored.
