These strict measures will take effect from Sunday and should slow down the rapid increase in the number of infections and hospital admissions in our northern neighbors, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said.
The catering industry, non-essential shops, culture and sports halls, among others, have to close their doors between 5 pm and 5 am. The Netherlands is therefore going into an evening lockdown.
Essential stores and drugstores are allowed to stay open until 8 p.m. Gas stations will remain open.
Rutte calls for limiting contact with elderly people over 70 years old as much as possible. “Be careful”, he said, “also when it comes to contact with grandchildren. Grab the iPad more often, or just the old-fashioned telephone.”
The mouth mask obligation and the distance rule will be expanded.
“Education will remain open,” says Rutte. “Not because there are no infections, but because the social impact and consequences for the children are enormous,” he says.
Rutte also asks Dutch people to stay indoors as much as possible and to work from home.
Fear of riots
There are agreements such as walking routes through the school building, face masks in the hallways, parents who are allowed to enter the school buildings as little as possible. In addition, the government is calling on teachers and students to take a self-test twice a week.

Shortly after the Prime Minister announced the new measures, there were already small demonstrations. Including in Rotterdam. There, demonstrations against the corona measures got out of hand last week and several people were injured.
The police are now also present in large numbers.
The municipality of The Hague has issued an emergency order for the center of the city. People who are demonstrably intent on disturbances or disturbance of public order, and who do not move away from this area, can be arrested.
