The Netherlands uses least sustainable energy from the EU NOW

The Netherlands makes the least use of renewable energy from all member states of the European Union, according to Friday figures Eurostat. 7.4 percent of Dutch energy came from renewable sources in 2018, while in 2020 this percentage should be 14 percent.

This makes the Netherlands far removed from the 2020 climate targets. The European Union as a whole seems to be able to meet the targets. The average in 2018 stood at 18 percent, which means it could reach the 20 percent goal in 2020.

Sweden uses renewable energy the most. 54 percent of the electricity comes from sustainable sources. This country has 49 percent renewable energy as a target for 2020 and has therefore already achieved its own target.

With the previous figures, from 2017, the Netherlands was still ahead of Luxembourg. Luxembourg then used 6.3 percent renewable energy and the Netherlands 6.5 percent. In 2018, Luxembourg overtook the Netherlands and used 9.1 percent.

The second to last place goes to Malta with 8 percent.
