In recent years, the Dutch have increasingly taken measures to protect personal information on the internet. In particular, we increasingly restrict access to profile information and social media posts.
The Netherlands leads the way in Europe in terms of protecting personal information on the internet. This is evident from research by statistics agency CBS into the ICT use of residents of the Netherlands. In 2021, 82 percent of the population said they were taking measures to protect their online data. Two years later, that percentage had risen to 89 percent.
In those two years, according to CBS, Dutch people have become more careful about publishing personal information online. About 78 percent of people over the age of 12 have limited or denied access to location data. In 2021 that was still 70 percent.
In addition, more than 70 percent restrict access to profile data on social media. That was still 55 percent in 2021.
The Netherlands is the European leader
Older people are less active in protecting online data than younger people. Three quarters of people over 65 are doing this, compared to 93 percent among 12 to 65 year olds.
The research is carried out throughout Europe. This shows that the Netherlands is a leader when it comes to the protection of online data. A total of 92 percent of Dutch people under the age of 75 are consciously involved in this.
The European average is much lower at 62 percent. After the Netherlands, Finland (91 percent), Ireland (82 percent), the Czech Republic (82 percent) and Denmark (81 percent) follow. At the very bottom of the list is Romania. There, 46 percent of residents are concerned with protecting online data.
