Nearly 80 percent of all Dutch people aged twelve or older have basic digital skills. In no other European country do so many people know how to use computers, the Internet or software.

According to statistics agency CBS, more and more Dutch people are digitally skilled. Two years ago, 74 percent of all Dutch people could use computers, the Internet and software, which is now 80 percent.

Our country has already achieved the European goal of ‘digitalization 2030’. By that year, 80 percent of the EU population must have at least basic digital skills.

Our country ranks first among the most digitally skilled countries in Europe, just above Finland. Ireland is in third place by a greater distance.

According to CBS, the Dutch are the most skilled in online communication. We are the least skilled in using software. How handy people are with the internet and computers varies greatly by age and education level.

Young people are more digitally skilled

The percentage of Dutch people with more than basic digital skills is more than twice as high among 25 to 44-year-olds as among 65 to 75-year-olds, and four times as high as among those over 75.

Of people with a college or university education, 70 percent had digital skills above the basic level. That is more than twice as many as people with only a VMBO diploma (29 percent).
