The Netherlands is the largest importer of solar panels in the world, with 89 percent coming from China. About 60 percent of our imported solar panels are immediately exported to other countries.
The total Dutch import of solar panels amounted to 11.9 billion euros last year, Statistics Netherlands reports Thursday. With 10.5 billion euros, the Netherlands is also the largest importer of solar panels from China. The United States is the second largest importer of solar panels, but hardly gets them from China. Brazil is in third place.
Germany is in fourth place. Most of the panels in that country are of Chinese manufacture, but they often ended up in Germany via our country. Spain is the fifth importer. That country again imports more panels directly from China than Germany.
Value of re-exports greater than exports
Last year, the Netherlands exported 731.4 billion euros worth of goods, of which 368.3 billion euros were re-exports. These are goods that were originally imported and then left the Netherlands almost unchanged. It is the first time that the value of re-exports exceeded Dutch-manufactured exports.
Last year, the value of re-exports was almost 58 percent higher than before the corona crisis. As a result, the total export value of goods also increased, by 236.5 billion euros (48 percent).
Dutch companies traded more, but produced or processed relatively fewer goods themselves. At 50.4 percent, the value of re-exports was therefore greater than the export value of Dutch products.
Re-exports earn much less per euro of export (12 cents in 2021) than exports of Dutch products (55 cents), because companies add less value when re-exporting.
