In addition to stricter measures for the catering industry, events such as concerts and sports competitions are also restricted. Multi-day events are not allowed to continue until August 14. At one-day events, just like in the catering industry, one and a half meters away must be kept.
The resigning prime minister also emphasized that the Dutch largely control the spread of the virus themselves. “Slowing down the virus is not just about tightening up measures. Also look at your own environment. I understand that drinks, parties and barbecues are held. Everyone needs fun. That is possible in itself, but do it wisely and take responsibility. Keep parties small and manageable,” Rutte addressed the Dutch citizens.
Rutte also shook off the criticism that the Dutch government itself has loosened the reins too quickly. “It was logical to make that decision. We were already taking into account an increase in infections. But it now appears to be going faster than the models said at the time,” he concludes. Health Minister Hugo De Jonghe also insists that the choice to abandon most corona measures at the end of June was “logical and responsible” at that time.
