The Dutch Ministry of Education said that the use of electronic devices in the classroom can distract students, so students in the country are only allowed to use them in special cases.
According to the “Guardian” report on July 4, the Dutch government announced that starting from January 1, 2024, students will be prohibited from using mobile phones, tablets and smart watches in classrooms nationwide to prevent them from being distracted in class. Students are only permitted to use electronic devices in exceptional circumstances such as taking information skills classes, medical reasons, or disabilities.
Dutch Education Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf said: “Although mobile phones have become part of our lives, they should not be in the classroom. Students need to be able to concentrate to study well. Scientific research Shows that mobile phones are a distraction and we need to protect students from them.”
The ban is the result of joint discussions between the Dutch Ministry of Education, schools and related organizations. Deckgraaf said that schools can arrange specific measures to implement this ban on their own, but if no significant results have been achieved by the summer of 2024, the Ministry of Education will issue relevant legal regulations.
Dijkgraaf told the Dutch parliament that he hoped the move would lead to a “cultural transformation” and improve learning outcomes for students.
Last week, Finland announced a similar decree in hopes of boosting students’ test scores. In Germany, only the state of Bavaria explicitly bans students from using mobile phones in schools and did not relax the ban until last school year.
