The Netherlands goes into ‘evening lockdown’: almost everything has to be…

Many sectors there have to close every day from Sunday at 5 p.m. and until 5 a.m. The measure will last for three weeks. These include restaurants and cafes, ‘non-essential’ shops, cinemas and theatres, museums, amusement parks, gyms and amateur sports. Schools can remain open. Grocery stores and drugstores can stay open until 8 p.m. Gas stations, for example, can remain open.

The mouth mask obligation and the distance rule are also being expanded. Domestic travel advice is being tightened. The government calls on everyone to stay at home and work from home as much as possible.

“In recent weeks I regularly think back to a year ago, to my first TV speech after which the Netherlands went into lockdown. Even then, there was a rapid growth in the number of corona patients in both the nursing ward and the intensive,” Prime Minister Mark Rutte started his press conference.

Shortly after the Prime Minister announced the new measures, there were already small demonstrations. Including in Rotterdam. There, demonstrations against the corona measures got out of hand last week and several people were injured.

All measures at a glance:

• The following applies to everyone: stay at home as much as possible.

• There is a closing time for all locations and events between 5 pm and 5 am.

• 1.5 meters away is mandatory for all adults from 18 years old.

• Essential shops, such as supermarkets and drugstores, remain open until 8 pm.

• Essential services, such as the notary or lawyer, mortgage advisor and medical contact professions, have normal opening hours.

• Amateur sports (matches and training) are no longer allowed between 5:00 PM and 5:00 AM. Top athletes (training and playing competitions) and professional art and culture practice are allowed after 5 p.m. Without an audience.

• 1.5 meters away and a mouth cap is mandatory in all places where a fixed seat applies. Such as in the catering industry, in cinemas and theaters. This has an effect on the number of visitors. There could be fewer people inside.

• 1.5 meters away and a face mask is mandatory at transfer locations, for example at trade fairs. This has an effect on the number of visitors. Fewer people can be admitted.

• The advice to work from home will be tightened up to ‘Work at home’. Can’t do that: always keep 1,5 meters away at work.

• Do you visit others or do you receive visitors? Then do a self-test.

• Be extra careful with contacts between older people from 70 years of age and children under 12 years of age.
