The leader of the political party D66, Sigrid Kaag, announced on Sunday afternoon that fellow party member Franc Weerwind (57) will become Minister of Legal Protection on 10 January.

Weerwind has been mayor of Almere since 2015. Last summer, he was reappointed for a second term, meaning that he would in principle be associated with the city until 2027.

Before he started working in Almere, Weerwind was mayor of Velsen, and before that mayor of the municipality of Niedorp. Franc is also co-founder of the Stichting Vriendschapsbands Nederland Suriname.

The name of Weerwind for the portfolio was previously mentioned by some national media. Kaag visited the candidates of her party on Sunday afternoon.

The new Dutch government is likely to be more diverse; Dilan Yesilgöz-Zegerius, VVD politician of Turkish-Kurdish descent, is named as the new Minister of Justice and Security.
