The Netherlands’ Election Process Explained: Why Does It Take Five Months?

The Netherlands will not go to the polls until mid-November to elect a new government. So there are five months between the moment when the government fell (yesterday) and the elections. Why is that taking so long? “It takes a while for a government to organize something so unexpected. No one could have imagined that the government would call it quits on the last day of the political year,” says VRT foreign journalist Ivan Ollevier.

“The political parties will make good use of their time. They must compile their lists. In every Dutch election there are also a handful of small, new political parties. And they must be given the opportunity to register and collect enough signatures. And there’s also the summer holidays in between.”
