The Netherlands still does not provide MPOX vaccines to African countries that need them. Health Minister Fleur Agema is waiting to see how the situation improves, she writes in a letter to the House of Representatives. “I think it is important that there are enough vaccines in the Netherlands to combat a possible outbreak. “
The European Commission and the US have pledged vaccine grants. Donations can help prevent an international outbreak, Agema writes, but first she wants to make sure the Netherlands has enough stock.
“The Netherlands is preparing to diagnose, treat and take measures to prevent the spread of an imported case,” says Agema. In the event of an outbreak, there are enough vaccines in stock to ‘limited vaccination campaign among risk groups’.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak of MPox, also known as monkeypox, an international emergency on Wednesday. Cases of the new virus variant have been reported mostly in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries. This type of virus has also appeared in Sweden.
The new variant appears to be more infectious than previous variants and appears to make patients sicker, the RIVM writes. The variant is ‘mainly transmitted through (hetero)sexual contact’.
“It’s still a long way off,” biologist Marion Koopmans told RTL News:
