The Netherlands and the world turn off the lights an hour for the climate

The lights of, among others, the Martinitoren in Groningen and the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam were temporarily turned off. The Grote Kerk in Breda and the Amsterdamse Poort in Haarlem also took part in the action. Households and dozens of town halls across the country were also voluntarily without artificial light for an hour, according to social media.

In Rotterdam, the World Wildlife Fund organized a ‘switch off moment’ at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Depot. Pianist Ruben Hein was there to accompany the moment musically.

Earth Hour was and is also celebrated elsewhere in the world, such as at the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre museum in Paris, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the pyramids in Egypt. The event first took place in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, where Earth Hour is organized by the Australian World Wildlife Fund.
