The Netherlands and Denmark also take part in Qatar protests

With the Netherlands and Denmark, other teams are joining the protests against the host country of the 2022 World Cup, Qatar. The associations launched the “Football Supports Change” campaign.

After Norway and Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark are also starting a protest as part of the controversial World Cup in Qatar in 2022. After the Danish Association announced a protest on Saturday, Oranje wore shirts that read “Football Supports Change” before their qualifying match against Latvia that evening, while the logo also adorned Gini Wijnaldum’s armband.

The tapes are a symbol of “freedom, tolerance and inclusiveness”, the Dutch association said on its website. “The pressure on Qatar should be increased from several sides,” said the Danes.

With the protest, the associations are calling for an improvement in the human rights situation in the host country. This was criticized by Amnesty International, among others, even after the Guardian reported 6500 deaths in the course of construction work in the desert state. The Netherlands rejects a boycott: “Human rights organizations emphasize that a boycott would lead to guest workers losing their wages.” Rather, “diplomatic pressure” should be exerted on the authorities at the tournament in order to bring about reforms.

Like the Elftal, Denmark will play against Moldova on Sunday (6 p.m.) with the special shirts. On Wednesday against Georgia and on Saturday against Turkey, Norway and Erling Haaland protested with shirts with the words: “Human Rights – On and off the pitch”. On Thursday, the German national team also wore shirts with the message “Human Rights” before their game against Iceland.
