Western Sahara is about six times the size of the Netherlands and is a disputed territory. Morocco annexed it in 1975 and urged compatriots to settle there. The Polisario movement, supported by neighboring Algeria, opposed the annexation.
A ceasefire was reached in 1991. The UN initially wanted a referendum in which the people of Western Sahara vote on self-determination, but that has still not taken place. In recent years, the UN has generally called for “a mutually acceptable solution”.
