The Netherlands Aims for Historic Davis Cup Win Against Italy in Quarter-Finals

Nov 16, 2023 at 5:34 PM Update: 31 minutes ago

Captain Paul Haarhuis thinks that the Dutch team can win the Davis Cup for the first time this year. The team must first face Italy in the quarter-finals next Thursday in Málaga, Spain.

“We can win the Davis Cup this year. It will be tough, but it is possible. We all have that feeling,” Haarhuis told the press at a press conference on Thursday. NOS. The Netherlands has never won the Davis Cup. In 2001, the team achieved its best performance by reaching the semi-finals. Last year, the Netherlands was eliminated by Australia in the quarter-finals.

In September, the Netherlands qualified as group winners for the Davis Cup Finals in Split, Croatia, after beating Finland and the United States. In the Davis Cup, two singles matches and one doubles match are played per meeting. The final part of the tournament will be completed in Málaga next week.

On behalf of the Netherlands, Tallon Greekpoor (ATP-25) and Botic van de Zandschulp (ATP-65) will play in the singles. Jean-Julian Rojer (ATP double 18) and Wesley Koolhof (ATP double 3) represent the Netherlands in doubles. “I am very happy that we are among the best eight teams in the world. That is very special and confirmation that these boys have had a good year,” says Haarhuis.

Haarhuis hopes for Sinner’s absence

Leader Greek Spoor is certainly having a good year. He won two ATP tournaments and was close to a stunt against Novak Djokovic at the beginning of this month. A crucial role may await Greekpoor, as he will probably face Italian leader Jannik Sinner (ATP-4). He was the first Italian ever to qualify for the semi-finals of the ATP Finals in Turin on Thursday.

Haarhuis is hopeful that Sinner will not participate against the Netherlands. “If he wins in Turin, people around him can say that it is time to take a rest. With or without Sinner there is a world of difference. With Sinner it will be difficult for Tallon, but we will have to perform stunts in a match in the singles. It is a difficult hurdle, but one that can be overcome.”

If the Netherlands wins the quarter-finals, it will play a semi-final against the winner of Serbia-Great Britain on Friday, November 25. The final will take place on November 26.
