It is certain that the new lockdown will not be popular with our northern neighbors. There, many people are reluctant to vaccinate and there have been violent protests against lockdown measures before. Compliance with the new measures can then become a problem.
Our colleague Ivan Ollevier was in the Netherlands today and notes that after two years of health crisis, there is hardly any support among the population for a lockdown, especially with Christmas and New Year just around the corner. It is certain that the measures will be another hard blow to the retail trade and the catering industry, according to Ollevier. It is expected that the Dutch will now quickly do panic shopping for the holidays while they still can and in a number of large cities there is a noticeable crowding in the shopping streets.
