From June 26, almost all restrictions that were in force in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic will be lifted in the Netherlands, Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced on Friday. “We are opening the country, expectations have come true” – he stressed.
During a press conference in The Hague, the head of government announced that the low number of new infections, progress in the COVID-19 vaccination campaign and low hospital occupancy allow us to take a “bolder step”.
It is abolition obligation to wear masks (except for public transport) or the ability to receive any number of guests at home. It will also be possible to organize sports events, and the recommendation to work remotely will be lifted.
Night clubs and discos are starting
The restrictions on the sale of alcohol will be completely lifted, stores will be able to operate during normal hours. Nightclubs and discos will open.
“During previous press conferences, we often said that we were counting on a safe and beautiful summer. Fortunately, these expectations have come true,” said the clearly satisfied head of government.
In a statement released to the media after the press conference, however, Rutte stressed that “despite the positive news, the virus has not disappeared because it is unpredictable and new variants are constantly appearing, so we must be careful and vigilant.
Health Minister Hugo de Jonge announced that from Saturday 18-year-olds will be able to arrange vaccinations.
